Prior to obtaining a final discharge in a consumer bankruptcy proceeding the debtor must complete an approved instructional course in personal financial management. The course can be completed over the Internet, in person, or by mail.
In a Chapter 7 case, a certificate of completion for the course must be filed with the bankruptcy court no later than 60 days after the date originally set for the 341a meeting (also known as the “meeting of creditors”).
In a Chapter 13 case, a certificate of completion for the course is not required until the end of the debtor’s 3 to 5 year debt repayment plan.
An approved instructional course can be completed online in 2 hours at www.moneysharp.org for $10.00.
